Während der Besatzungszeit zog seine Familie zuerst in Bingen, 1956 nach Mainz, dort betrieb die Familie eine Weingroßhandlung. Schon früh zeigte er Interesse an Literatur und vor allem dem Schreiben. Seinen Abschluss erlangte er allerdings an der Höheren Handelsschule. Zunächst arbeitete er beim ZDF, unter anderem in der Redaktion „Dokumentarspiel“ und „Politisches Kabarett“. 1971 übernahm er die Claudius-Buchhandlung in Mainz. Jürgen Kross veröffentliche zahlreiche Gedichtbände." ],
