Bei der Doppelwahl 1200 stimmte nur eine Minderheit des Domkapitels für ihn; aber sowohl der Papst als auch der ebenfalls aus einer Doppelwahl hervorgegangene König Otto IV. erkannten ihn an. Er wurde 1200 investiert, erhielt 1201 in Xanten die Priester- und Bischofs-Weihe und 1202 in Rom das Pallium. 1206 musste er nach Rom fliehen, wo er 1207 zum Kardinal ernannt wurde. Erst nach dem Verzicht von Bischof Lupold von Schönfeld konnte er 1208 endgültig nach Mainz zurückkehren.
