Er ist Teil der Malerfamilie Hoch. 1778 erhielten Johann Jacob und sein Bruder Georg Friedrich Hoch ein Stipendium vom Mainzer Kurfürsten Friedrich Carl von Erthal. Die Brüder zogen gemeinsam nach Wien. Johann Jacob reist 1783 nach Paris und stellt dort Werke im Salon de la Correspondance aus. Hoch kehrt 1788 zurück nach Mainz und wirkt dort weiterhin als Maler. Er heiratet 1820 Kunigunde Beckhaus. " ],
