Er war Burggraf auf der trierischen Burg in Klotten, verheiratet mit Irmgard, der Tochter Winand v. Rore. Er ist wahrscheinlich identisch mit jenem Heinrich de Fonte, der im April 1331 den Verkauf eines Gartens in Brachtendorf an das Kloster Rosenthal bezeugt Am 12.8.1337 erwähnt als Burggraf zu Cochem, damit gehört er als Amtmann von Cochem zu den Stützen der weltlichen Verwaltung des Trierer Erzbischofs, dem auch juristische Aufgaben im Amtsbezirk oblagen, als Vorsitzender des weltlichen Gerichts zu Cochem. In einer Quelle wird er als \"Freund\" Balduins bezeichnet u. gehörte demnach zum Kreis jener Personen, die das besondere Vertrauen des Erzbischofs genossen. 1349 erhält er vom Trierer Erzbischof einen größeren Gebäudekomplex, genannt \"die Smitte\", in Cochem zum Mannlehen. In einer am 9.1.1354 ausgestellten Urkunde in Mainz von König Karl IV., in der der Trierer Erzbischof mit der \"Veste zu Dune in der Eufeln gelegen\" belehnt wird, erscheint H.v.Cl. als Teilhaber der Burg, diese Belehnung wird zwei Jahre später erneut unter namentlicher Auflistung Heinrich, \"den man nennet von Clotten\" wiederholt. Auch nach dem Tode Balduins blieben die engen Beziehungen zum neuen Erzbischof Boemund (1354/62) bestehen. Während er noch am 15.6.1365 als Cochemer Burggraf einen Verkauf von Weingüter in Pommern bezeugt, wird er am 4.9.1367 als verstorbener Burggraf von Cochem erwähnt. Brachtendorf) 1130 in einer Stiftsurkunde für die Augustiner-Chorherrenabtei in Springiersbach genannt, sein Sohn Johann ist bereits 1190 Ministeriale u. Burggraf von Cochem. Dieses Geschlecht ist nachweisbar bis zum Jahre 1461. Mit Franco v. Clotten gibt sich ein anderes Geschlecht die Bezeichnung v.Cl, sie führen das Wappen mit dem silbernen Balken im blauem Feld, sie werden nach 1247 in Boppard aufgeführt. Eine andere Linie v. Clotten, die mit den drei Lilien (2:1) im Wappen, erscheint ebenfalls mit einem Theoderich im Jahre 1244 u. kann bis 1491 nachgewiesen werden, mögliche Verwandte sind das Rittergeschlecht derer v. Lissingen, Nachfahren sind die Burgmannen v. Treis u. Vögte v. Carden. Wieder eine andere Adelsfamilie v. Clotten sind die mit dem Beinamen Birnschure, in ihrem Wappen finden wir den schrägrechten Stufenbalken belegt mit kleinen Kreuzchen, dieses Wappen führten auch die Ritter v. Pyrmont. Bereits 1260 wird ein Hermann v. Winneburg mit diesem, Beinamen erwähnt. Johann v.Cl. genannt Birnschure ist 1365 ein Schwager des Johann v. Pyrmont, eines Sohnes Heinrich v. Pyrmont u. der Kunigunde v. Daun. Die v. Clotten mit dem silbernen Gitter in blauem Feld sind Abkommen derer v. Daun. Bereits 1312 wird ein Heinrich v.Cl. erwähnt, sein Vater Johann wohnte 1314 der Krönung Friedrichs des Schönen in Bonn bei. Eberhard ist 1316 Burgmann zu Cochem. Heinrich v.Cl. erscheint 1350 als Burggraf zu Cochem, ebenfalls sein Sohn Johann v.Cl.; Johann v.Cl. sein gleichnamiger Sohn wurde Domherr in Trier, da er nur eine Schwester hatte, die den Friedrich v. In Bonn, Heidelberg und Berlin studierte er Medizin und promovierte zum Dr. med. In Berlin diente er einjährig. Um 1847 ließ er sich als praktischer Arzt in Saarburg nieder. In Saarburg wurde L 1848 in das Frankfurter Vorparlament und 1849 in den zu Köln tagenden Städtetag gewählt. Wärend der Choleraepidemie genoß er die Anerkennung der Saarburger Bürger für seinen Einsatz. Enttäuschungen (heute unbekannter Art) waren es, die ihn 1856 veranlaßten, eine Auswanderung nach Amerika vorzubereiten. Zunächst ging er nach Trier, wo er in der Redaktion der Trierische Zeitung mitarbeitete. Als der leitende Redakteur Dr. Lagay 1859 zurücktrat, übernahm L (für 19 Jahre) dessen Stellung. Die Auswanderung kam nicht zustande.
